Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 30.10.2015

Akeem Stewart was in superb form at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Doha, Qatar, yesterday, the Trinidad and Tobago athlete establishing a new men’s javelin F43 world record of 54.77 metres.

Stewart’s record-breaking effort earned him fourth spot in the men’s javelin throw F44 event. The Tobago Falcons thrower missed out on a podium finish by just 41 centimetres, Iceland’s Helgi Sveinsson claiming the bronze medal with a 55.18m effort.

Cape Verde’s Marcio Fernandes threw 56.24m to strike gold, while silver went to New Zealand’s Rory McSweeney (55.80m).

Stewart re-set his own F43 world record three times in yesterday’s competition. In the second round, he landed the spear 53.69m to improve on the 53.36m standard he had established in grabbing gold at the 2015 Parapan American Games in Toronto, Canada, in August.
